It was natural that Phutkapahar would be reserved for the public sector, while Birlas would have to be allowed to secure the less promising blocks for themselves which is what happened. Birla (Gwalior) acquired about 1,240 acres under lease. Prospecting operations continued vigorously in both Phutkapahar and in the Amar kantak areas by both GSI and Birlas.

Railways Mauled THE recession caught up with the railways in 1967-68. This is plainly visible in their operating results for the year. Gross receipts were substantially lower than budget estimates. Goods earnings (which form almost 60 per cent of total receipts) showed a fall of 3 per cent. Passenger earnings (which provide 31 per cent of receipts) have kept upto budget estimates, though there is a fall in earnings from the upper class traffic made good by earnings from third class (see Tables 1 and 2).

Tax Concessions Will Not Help
