Is Democracy and Decentralisation the Answer for Lakshadweep?

Tensions are simmering in the union territory of Lakshadweep over a series of anti-people regulations issued by the present administrator. While everyone in the island and their supporters in mainland have been protesting against the draconian proposals, no one is discussing about the role of the deficit in democracy and decentralisation in the islands that led to the present crisis. It is crystal clear that the controversial regulations brought by present administrator of Lakshadweep are not in the best interest of a democratic society.

Formation of the Union Territory of Ladakh

The response of people of Ladakh to the formation of the union territory, as it has manifested one year later, is analysed. After an initial sense of satisfaction to their long-pending demand for UT status, people in Leh have become as restless as the people in Kargil to the changes resulting from their UT status, and there are a lot of anxieties related to lack of representation and concerns related to jobs, land, environment and heritage.

The Domicile Law of Jammu and Kashmir

The domicile law introduced in the newly created union territory of Jammu and Kashmir has aggravated the already deteriorating situation. The policy is a result of a historical, political and policy myopia of the current dispensation, which has failed to understand the significance of the earlier permanent residency laws for different communities across the erstwhile state of J&K. It has evoked fear of demographic change, loss of economic and cultural rights and has engineered profound changes in the political structure of the region.

BJP’s Sweeping Electoral Victory in Haryana

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s sweeping victory in Haryana in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections has highlighted the changing nature of politics in the state. The BJP overshadowed the regional parties which used to be its coalition partners in past elections. Dynastic politics which was one of the main features of Haryana politics was rendered ineffective as the BJP was accepted across various socio-demographic indicators.
