India Needs to Wake Up From Its Nuclear Fantasy

Nuclear power generation in India has consistently failed to meet projected output. The Indian nuclear establishment needs to stop promoting nuclear power as a viable source of clean energy.

Koodankulam's Untameable Atomic Reactor

A 1,000 MWe pressurised water reactor failed four times in the final commissioning test. Numerous emergency shutdowns and four maintenance outages have kept the reactor off-grid for days on end, and it has supplied far less electricity than it was supposed to. Yet, plans to import a dozen more reactors of the same vintage from the same vendor are in progress.

Indo-Japan Memorandum on Civil Nuclear Cooperation

India and Japan have reportedly reached a preliminary understanding to sign a civil nuclear cooperation agreement after certain technical details are finalised. However domestic politics of Japan, anti-nuclear groups and India’s reluctance to join the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty are some of the concerns that would have to be addressed before the deal is finalised.
