Public Procurement in Medical Supplies

The Nanded government hospital tragedy is analysed in this article, and it is pointed out that there is a need to revisit the system of public procurement of medical supplies. Maharashtra moved from its old procurement system to the Medical Goods Procurement Authority Act, 2023 in March. Despite that, the tragedy took place and is said to have been a result of poor medical supply procurement.

Blended Finance in the Health Sector of India

The blended-financing vehicle created in India during the COVID-19 pandemic provided support to social initiatives in healthcare training and service delivery. The organisation and functioning of blended fi nance is complex. Thus we put forth some concerns related to its role in the Indian healthcare system.

The appropriateness of the criterion that pegs the ratio of public health expenditure to the gross domestic product—which is volatile—needs a re-examination. The targets for allocation and expenditure of financial resources for health need to be based on indicators that can be monitored.
