Maharashtra’s War on Plastic

A brief investigation into the effects of the plastic ban in Maharashtra reveals that such regulations are riddled with arbitrariness and the absence of any accurate assessment of the scale of the problem of plastic waste. Further, such bans have the unintended consequence of creating a downturn in the plastic recycling sector, a sector which—in the absence of municipal support—handles much of the plastic waste of urban centres like Mumbai.

Of Gandhi, Godse and the Missing Files

This paper revisits Indian history when a Hollywood movie, Nine Hours to Rama (1963), claiming to be "a film on Gandhi" turned out to be--much to the Indian government's embarrassment--a biopic on Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse. The film, which had been provided sufficient facilities for its making by the government, triggered off a huge uproar in the public sphere and a subsequent ban on the film. It is argued that a peculiar desecration anxiety and the conjoined traumas of patricide and partition linked to the totemic figure of Gandhi engendered such an outcry in India. Similarly, apart from other political contingencies, the film and the evidence of the government's collusion in its making threatened to undermine the Nehruvian government's sovereignty by questioning the legitimacy of its claim to Gandhi's legacy and ultimately resulted in the files related to the film being untraceable in the government archival vaults.

The collapse of arecanut prices after the ban on gutkha imposed by some states has plunged farmers into a crisis and lack of export avenues has further exacerbated the situation. Along with an MSP policy for arecanut to assist the beleaguered farmers, intercropping with remunerative crops can also be considered as a safeguard against income uncertainty.

Banning NBA?

The Gujarat High Court has asked the central government to consider banning the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) based on a suit filed by an NGO (that ironically champions civil liberties) that alleges that NBA is indulging in anti-national activities with the help of foreign agencies, by preventing

Countering Fundamentalism

Given its fundamentalist rhetoric, it would be surprising if SIMI's attacks on other faiths and its strident championing of the dream of an Islamist Khilafat would not have further exacerbated communal tensions in those parts of the country where it is active. But if the government is serious about countering organisations like SIMI it would do well to turn its attention to redressing the growing alienation and insecurity of Muslims in the country which provide fertile ground for these organisations to take root and for their propaganda to fall on receptive ears.
