ASER and Youth Aspirations


As the dividend of the population which comprises young adults is increasing, the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) (Rural) 2023 released by Pratham is pivotal in understanding how the aspirations of youth are not necessarily matching their skill sets. This is especially the case with regard to reading, writing, arithmetic, and digital skills. The report surveyed 34,745 rural youth across 26 states, ranging in the age bracket of 14–18 years.

As per the report, while many among the males want to join the military and police, several of those interviewed also aspire to enter into the field of information technology or engineering, and more than half the females interviewed wish to still pursue jobs in teaching, medicine, and police.
