The Annual Status of Education Report

It is time that the disconnect between the youth aspirations and skill sets is checked.

The Annual Status of Education Report (Rural) 2023, facilitated by the Pratham Education Foundation, highlights the continued disconnect between the rising aspirations of the rural youth and their skill sets in reading, maths and the digital spheres. The report is based on a survey of 34,745 rural youth in the 14–18 age group across 26 states.

What is striking is the diverse and changing professional aspirations of the youth, with some sharp divisions across genders. A noteworthy trend is the growing popularity of security services as a career option among males. More than a quarter of them aspired to join the military or police in almost equal numbers. This is far higher than the one-sixth that aspired to join these security services, as indicated in a similar survey in 2017. Maybe security services are now one of the last avenues offering secure employment to the rural youth in the face of the large deficit in job opportunities in the formal sector.
