Agrarian Relations in West Bengal
Socio-Economic Surveys of Three Villages in West Bengal: A Study of Agrarian Relations edited by Aparajita Bakshi and Tapas Singh Modak, New Delhi: Tulika, 2021; pp 496, `1,250
The book, Socio-Economic Surveys of Three Villages in West Bengal: A Study of Agrarian Relations, is a collection of 13 essays. The introduction by the two editors is followed by chapters written by the editors and other authors, a mix of well-known scholars and budding scholars, and to that extent creates room for a wider participation of scholars in various stages of their careers.
The volume is the fifth book in the Socio-Economic Survey series of the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (FAS). The series puts forth the findings from village surveys conducted by the FAS under its programme Project on Agrarian Relations in India (PARI). The study is located in West Bengal (WB), the timeline is after 2010, and the analysis draws from core data from two PARI surveys conducted in 2010 and 2015. The data is drawn from three villages in the districts Bankura, Malda, and Cooch Behar. Each village is located in a distinct agroclimatic zone, red laterite zone, old alluvial zone, and the terai zone, respectively.
