Useful but Patchy Material on Agricultural Production
Distress in the Fields: Indian Agriculture after Economic Liberalization edited by R Ramakumar, New Delhi: Tulika Books, 2022; pp 484, `1,500.
This is a collection of papers bringing together material on Indian agriculture focusing particularly on the period following liberalisation in 1991. Its title is somewhat misleading. The book focuses on agricultural production. It also focuses on crops and not livestock, in common with much of the work on agriculture in India where it is not often recognised how integral livestock are to agriculture.
The book contains a lot of useful material but it is patchy. Some of the chapters are less comprehensive than others. There are serious omissions too. This is a problem for what is intended as a textbook. It is also a problem for a textbook and reference work that it does not have an index.
