Future of Electric Vehicles in India

The amount of pollution emitted from vehicles running on petrol, diesel, and even compressed natural gas has numerous negative effects on our health and the environment. It is estimated that the contribution of motor vehicles to the world’s direct carbon dioxide emissions is close to 24%. The International Energy Agency projects that by 2030, the transport sector will be responsible for nearly 50% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. Using these fossil fuels for our consumption is unsustainable, so we have to look for different alternatives for the long run like renewable sources of energy. With increasing environmental problems, sustainable consumption has become a new hotspot and has attracted a huge interest among researchers and policymakers. There is a strong linkage between the transport sector, fossil fuels, and greenhouse gas emissions. There is an urgent need to address this interconnectedness and organise a complete makeover of existing unsustainable modes of transportation towards environmentally friendly transport modes like electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles have numerous benefits like reduction in noise pollution, integration of renewable energy, etc, but its most beneficial aspect is the reduction in the emission of pollutants in the air. Sure, the production of these vehicles would cause some amount of pollution but the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Reduction in air pollution is not only great for the environment but also our health. These pollutants have serious repercussions; causing ailments like heart disease, asthma, lung cancer, pneumonia and respiratory infections, etc.
