Do Female Lives Matter?

The rising cases of murder demand that murder as such should be considered a crime against women in India.

Ankita Bhandari, a young woman of 19 years who worked in a resort near Rishikesh, Uttarakhand was killed by her employer and two accomplices on 18 September. According to media reports, it was only due to protests after she had gone missing for several days that the police swung into action. The accused, Pulkit Arya, confessed to having pushed her off a cliff into a canal, from where her body was subsequently recovered. The victim’s WhatsApp messages to a friend say that she was trying to resist pressure to provide “extra services” (code for sexual services). Pulkit Arya is no ordinary person, being the son of a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Vinod Arya.
