The Geopolitics of the Democracy Summit
Strategic projection of democratic credentials appears to be driven by the urge to reassert US hegemonic interests.
Atul Bhardwaj writes:
The two-day democracy summit spearheaded by the Joe Biden administration was virtually attended by more than 100 world leaders. Yet, the event has failed to be a grand success. Not just the Chinese and Russians but the majority of the mainstream Western media has been critical of President Biden’s idea of gathering countries that are either half-baked democracies or “electoral autocracies” under an overarching ideological umbrella. With the second summit due in 2022, it is clear that the Biden administration and Western strategy pundits will not abandon the idea in the wake of criticism that it has received.
