Khrushchev: Sauce and Sausage

“If lack of intelligence is shown on the part of leaders of such states as the USA and the ­Soviet Union, then it would not only be a calamity for the people of our countries, but for the people of the whole world. A great deal depends on the mutual understanding bet­ween our two states.” We have seen so much of the Soviet-American detente that the quotation would appear to be really from a bygone age. Yet it is well to remember that it was barely a decade ago that Khrushchev said this to visiting American journalists. Khrushchev’s major contribution was the Soviet-American detente and it is a measure of his achievement that it still is the mainstay of the international system.
