A Partial Reckoning

Tamil Female Civil Space: Its Evolution and Decline in Tamil Eelam by N Malathy, Delhi: Aakar Books, 2019; pp 144, 395.

N Malathy’s Tamil Female Civil Space: Its Evolution and Decline in Tamil Eelam examines the politicisation of women that took place in Tamil society in the north and, to a lesser extent, in the east of Sri Lanka, in the wake of the struggle for national self-determination that was initiated in the 1970s. She foregrounds two trajectories of change, as these unfolded under the aegis of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE): a social initiative that mobilised women through consciousness raising and community work; and a militant political effort that resulted in a considerable number of women joining the armed struggle against the Sri Lankan state.
