Accessible Voting Systems

This is in response to the letter “Enabling Voters with Visual Impairment” by Akshay Bajad (EPW, 19 June 2021). It made for an interesting read but the proposed framework of the author has some issues and has missed certain things.

Every citizen of a nation has the right to vote for a genuine candidate who could really lead the society towards development and improvement through the electoral process. It not only allows people to choose their representative, but also allows them to freely express their opinions on various problems. Visually challenged individuals or those who have low eyesight are also eligible to vote and run for elections. Visually challenged people should be given the option to vote independently and discreetly. Voting is an important aspect of democracy for everyone, regardless of their physical circumstances or who or what they are.
