Kerala: CPI’s Fate in the Balance

The abject pleas of Achuta Menon, the CPI Chief Minister of Kerala, to the Congress party in the State to join his Ministry have availed him nothing. The joint meeting of the KPCC and the Congress legislature party on April 24 decided against the party joining the Government. The joint meeting had to be called as a majority in the legislature party was in favour of accepting the Chief Minister’s invitation whereas the KPCC, which is dominated by what has been called the party’s youth wing, was opposed to it. Clearly, the views of the latter have prevailed despite Achuta Menon’s pleadings with the Prime Minister herself in Delhi.
