Understanding West Bengal Economy

This article aims to clarify some points raised in Prasenjit Bose’s “State of the West Bengal Economy: Beyond Aporetic Official Claims” (EPW, 26 January 2019). The author has compared gross state domestic product (GSDP) estimates of West Bengal, previously published by the state finance department, with GSDP estimates presently available with the Central Statistics Office (CSO). In doing this, he has at times compared “advanced estimates” with “actual estimates” and sometimes two estimates of GSDP obtained using two different methodologies.
