Succour for Bombay

Maharashtra Government’s decision to entrust, for urban development, the areas in the hinterland facing Bombay harbour, to the City and ­Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), a fully-owned subsidiary of the State Industrial and Investment Corporation of Maharashtra (SICOM), may mark a major breakthrough in urban planning. The proposal had been debated in the Bombay press for the past four years. Briefly, the proposal is to develop about 80 square miles of virgin land on the mainland across the harbour into a metropolitan township. This township is expected to absorb the projected growth of Bombay’s population.
