With the death of Professor Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (to call him as he liked to be called), a remarkable era in modern Indian science has almost come to a close. Of the handful of Indians who made outstanding contributions to science in what we may now call the pre-Bhabha era, very few are left with us.
