Whither Rural India? Political Economy of grarian Transformation in Contemporary India is a timely publication that discusses the very important question of agrarian change in India in the larger context of economic transition and chan­ging policy directions. This has been the major research concern of Venkatesh Athreya for whom the festschrift is dedicated. The collection brings together ­essays, on agrarian transformation in contemporary India from a heterodox political economy perspective by some very well-known names in the field. In my view, the book deals with three inter-related aspects of rural transformation in India. I discuss the chapters of the book in that order.
