Rice Over Race
The overwhelming vote by which the United National Party (UNP) was thrown out of power on May 27 and replaced by a coalition led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) reaffirms the flexibility of Ceylon’s political system and the sophistication of its electorate. Ceylon’s political parties and institutions have shown a great ability to reflect social change and respond to new social demands.
