Seeing Yourself in Fiction

The writer finally finds characters in fiction she can relate to when she reads Sunita De Souza Goes to Sydney by Roanna Gonsalves.

Most of us read fiction to know we’re not alone. We find stories memorable and revisit them because we find a connection with a character or a place. Lines stay with us long after we have closed the book because a writer finally expressed a feeling or thought that we might have wanted to, but never could! We assimilate experiences from the places we have lived in and travelled.

The places that dominate my psyche are Bahrain and India. I’m from Mangaluru, but was born and raised in Bahrain. In India, I have spent most of my time in Bengaluru (for studies) and Mumbai (on annual vacations).
