Tejinder Gagan (1951–2018)

On 11 July 2018, at the age of 67, eminent Hindi novelist Tejinder Gagan—who was living in Raipur after his retirement as the Deputy Director General of Doordarshan—breathed his last following a cardiac arrest.

The growth and development of the Hindi novel cannot be imagined without the contribution of novelists of Punjabi background. After Premchand, it was Yashpal who contributed to the growth of the realist Hindi novel, and then there was a stream of such writers: Agyeya, Upendranath Ashk, Balwant Singh, Krishna Sobti, Mohan Rakesh, Bhisham Sahni, Jagdish Chander, all stalwarts of the Hindi novel. Tejinder Gagan was part of this glorious tradition and, in a way, the last major novelist hailing from Punjab and writing in Hindi.
