Objectionable Advertisement


We—concerned health networks, women’s groups, civil society organisations and individuals—would like to express our unequivocal objection to the advertisement for the launch of a new show, “Zindagi ke Crossroads” on Sony Entertainment Television on 6 June 2018. The advertisement titled “Mother Asked to Kill Her Own Child” presents a narrative about Neha, who is pregnant after many years of trying to have a child. The foetus has been diagnosed with permanent abnormalities, which could not be “discerned,” but which were bound to prevent the child from “leading a normal life.”

According to the narrative, the husband and his sister—who is a doctor—suggest an abortion. The narrative then poses the dilemma: Would Neha choose to save motherhood at the cost of the foetus leading a life of unknown suffering, or would she “play god,” by opting for an abortion that would be a “decision against fate”? This is then followed by the highlighted quote: “She would be playing God.”
