For centuries, humans have kept fit by doing simple exercises. But today, people are falling for the gym industry’s aggressive marketing.

Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai, the city’s largest, is notorious for its filthy conditions and overcrowding. About 2,800 undertrials are crammed into an area meant for about 800 people. The jail’s dark side is portrayed in the books Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo and Shantaram by Gregory Roberts. Last year, a woman undertrial was beaten to death there, reportedly by jail staff, offering us a glimpse of the rot inside.
