In feminist circles, this book has been much awaited. From time to time, over the last few years, our curiosity and interest has been whetted by written and oral presentations made by Kavita Panjabi of parts of her ongoing work on women in the Tebhaga movement. Now that the book has finally appeared, it must be said that it fully justifies the expectations and anticipation of so many of us. It is a remarkable documentation of aremarkable historical time, one thatoccupies a special place in the history of the women’s movement in India and constitutes an important episode in the anti-imperialist struggle, around the time India gained freedom.
