In the 1990s, an average business lived for about 50 years. In 2013, as a survey indicated, this lifetime had reduced to about eight years. I am not sure if anyone has researched the life of journals. Nevertheless, one would hope a journal lives several times longer as it serves our needs of a much longer now1 than the average business. At 50, therefore, celebrations would be incomplete without a commentary on the constituency and needs served by a journal, particularly one that has become 50.
