Legacy of a ‘Super Cop’

Kanwar Pal Singh (KPS) Gill is generally considered to have been one among the greatest policemen of India and also one of its worst human rights abusers. Hailed as a “super cop” he leaves behind a divided legacy, hero to an overwhelming majority of Punjab’s Hindus and nationalists and a villain for a majority of Punjab’s Sikhs as can be gauged from social media’s response to his death. In a way this perfectly epitomises the days of the 1980s and early 1990s when Punjab and India were polarised along communal lines.
