Unique and Precious

The writer, an economist, was on the faculty of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, followed by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy in Delhi. She was a member of the Thirteenth Finance Commission, whose recommendations covered the fiscal years 2010-15 and has regularly published research papers and book reviews in this journal. Here, she writes about why she thinks the EPW is an "incredible institution."

The Economic & Political Weekly is more than just another weekly or academic journal. It is a truly unique institution in the world of intellectual and academic discourse, aggregating as it does several of the functions performed by other publications with a limited focus.

It is a journal with an editorial voice, carrying Commentaries on noteworthy global and national events, while also being a refereed journal. Each issue also has research and review papers spanning economics, political science, sociology, history and anthropology. It is rather like the Economist, covering key world developments but in more summary form, and without the support of any international bureaus or reporters. As an academic journal, it covers many disciplines, but does not necessarily require that any individual paper should span more than one discipline. It also gives more space for critical responses to the research papers it publishes than most academic journals do, and has thus become a vigorous forum for discussion on economic methods and techniques, as much as a debating space for opposing ideologies. It has book reviews which go beyond the narrow range to which most academic journals confine themselves.
