JNU: A Social Laboratory

The article “Why India Needs JNU” (EPW, 4 June 2016) by the eminent sociologist K L Sharma delineates a university which is not only an academic institution but also a unique “public university” in India with egalitarian and inclusive characteristics. He has rightly mentioned that Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as a boon to the academic world remains a source of information for those who wish to move up in academics in particular and in their lives in general.

The university once again proved its significant contribution in the discourse of “nationalism” in spite of being repeatedly labelled as the hub of “anti-nationals” by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. By pressurising the university administration the ruling party tried to discourage us through a deliberate delay in scholarships. However, it could not discourage the students from participating in the discourse and series of lectures on nationalism in the university where thousands of students registered their presence.
