In Leftism in India, 1917–1947, author Satyabrata Rai Chowdhuri shows how Indian communists and the Congress socialists together shaped the trajectory of the anti-colonial struggle in India, and the ways in which they subverted Gandhi’s leadership of the Congress to push the movement in a more “democratic-socialist” direction. He contends that both communism and socialism began as reactions to aspects of Gandhi’s leadership of the Congress, particularly non-violence, his “feudal outlook” towards Indian society and economy, and his continued desire to retain control of the masses.
