Uneven Treatment

Uneven Treatment

'Countering Naxalism with Development: Challenges of Social Justice and State Security' edited by Santosh Mehrotra, Sage, 2014; pp 189, Rs 795.

This book of essays begins with the claim by its editor Santosh Mehrotra in his opening essay that it is about human development and the root causes of the challenge of Maoist violence (or “left wing extremism”, the official term) in the tribal areas of nine states in India. The essays are written by a select group of scholars and former civil servants with experience of working on the development of marginalised social groups, mainly the scheduled castes (SCs) and scheduled tribes (STs) who are in large numbers in the tribal areas covered in the volume. He provides an overview of the development challenges in the areas and summarises the specific actions that he considers necessary to resolve the violence and enable human development to occur.
