It is very hard for the theorist to make his voice heard above the raucous din of the uncultured voices that emanate from the underworld of a gaggle of radical elements who systematically inhabit the pages of such print excrescences as EPW, in which they make their case, once every seven days, for populist schemes, unproductive freebies, and other exchequer-bankrupting doles and handouts to the unwashed millions. The beast must be bearded in its own den, which is the death-defying reason for the present column. To see why subsidies are economically unviable, shall we give the voice of reason a brief chance to express itself?
