Global Financial Crisis and Labour

The State of Labour: The Global Financial Crisis and Its Impact edited by Sharit K Bhowmik; New Delhi: Routledge, 2014; pp xxvii + 342, Rs 895.

This book is a collection of 12 papers that were presented at a conference on “Financialization of Capital: Deteriorating Conditions of Labour” sponsored by the Global Labour University and organised by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. The papers cover four main themes: inequality and labour’s share in national income and the 2008 financial crisis; employment in the informal sector; jobs in new kinds of enterprises linked to global production systems; and trade unions as providers of protection to labour in an era of globalisation. Besides, there is a stand-alone paper that deals with a particular issue of employment in India.
