On Open Defecation

Assa Doron and Robin Jeffrey are appreciated for their holistic analysis of the issue of “Open Defecation in India” (EPW, 6 December 2014). However, there are certain issues which need further debate and scrutiny.

The authors are aware of the issue of Western bias, when they state, “Is this not another example of introducing inappropriate ideas, privileged by the ‘modern West’, to denigrate India?”
(p 77). They also recognise that the “Reports in the New York Times and The Economist gave global publicity to open defecation and its adverse effects on India’s children” (p 72). Yet they fail to acknowledge that the issue of open defecation per se is imported from the West.
