More Regarding Beef Ban

The logic of Chandrashekhar G Ranade in favour of “zero-till agriculture” in response to the ban on cow slaughter is paradoxical and biased (“Regarding Beef Ban,” EPW, 14 March 2015).

First, according to him, the ban on cow slaughter is adversely affecting the leather industry. How does a ban on cow slaughter in one state (Maharashtra) affect the leather industry from “Mumbai to Chennai?” Moreover, the cow is not the only source of leather. Further, leather is also obtained after the natural death of the cow, not only after slaughter.
