Police Firing on Women

On 8 March 2015, when the world was observing International Women’s Day, Odisha police fired upon women agitators at Namatara village of Kendrapara District and injured 16 villagers, nine of whom (five women, two girl children and two men) received serious bullet injuries and had to be admitted to a hospital in Cuttack. The police have also arrested six people on charges of attacking the police and have filed other cases against 60 people. Namatara village has only 200 houses, most belonging to people from the Dalit communities.

The women were observing Women’s Day by burning the foreign liquor shop at Namatara village. For the last two years they had been demanding that this shop close down and had even approached Member of Parliament Baijayant Panda, Member of the Legislative Assembly Pratap Dev and the district collector several times for this. But their demand was ignored and the shop flourished. Failing to get relief from those in power, the women decided that they themselves would destroy the shop on International Women’s Day. While coming back after this the district armed police reached the village and fired on them.
