Glimpses from the Past: Life at the Hub

Romesh Thapar was the founder-editor of the journal Seminar, published from New Delhi.

This piece was originally published in the 29 February 1964 issue of the Economic WeeklyEPW brings you this article from its rich achives to foster debate and discussion on issues that remain as relevant now as it was back then.

Abstract of the Article: The author reflects on the cultural and intellectual life of India's capital Delhi, which was back then still considered backward in comparison to the cosmopolitan character of Mumbai (erstwhile Bombay) and Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta). He argues that the capital has been monopolised by three types who seem to feed on each other - politicians, bureaucrats and diplomats.
