Significant Steps

The end of the political blockade by the United States allows Cuba a rare opportunity to renew socialism.

One could argue that it was only a matter of time, even if it took five decades and more to finally happen. Failing in its attempt to isolate the lone remaining communist government in the region and instead having to witness Cuba become a beacon for progressive governments in Latin America, the United States (US) has finally changed its policy towards Cuba. Diplomatic ties between these two countries will finally be renewed following statements to that effect by heads of both states. The restoration of formal relations was made possible by the mediation of the Vatican and Canada.

With this accord, an old vestige of the cold war seems to be extinguishing as the US may now end its decades-long policy of political meddling, economic sabotage, running naval blockades and attempting to assassinate the leaders of Cuba. The economic embargo remains but US President Barack Obama has promised to ease this out as well in the medium term with congressional approval; though with a right-reactionary Republican Congress in place this seems unlikely as of now. In the meantime, diplomatic ties will help citizens travel between the two countries and also allow for increased remittances by Cuban emigres to the island.
