Racism in India

The editorial “Racism in India” (EPW, 11 October 2014) has rightly highlighted the racist trait in the Indian psyche as evidenced from some recent incidents in several parts of the country. By the time this issue reached my hands, two more incidents had appeared in the news.

On 14 October, at 7.30 pm, in Kothanur area in Bangalore, an engineering student from the north-eastern state of Manipur was attacked by men who allegedly demanded that he “speak in the Kannada language or get out”. T Michael Lamjathang Haokip, who heads a Manipur Students’ Body, alleged that he and his friends were eating at a roadside stall when three men threatened and later attacked them.
