Dhritarashtra's Democracy

Even though dynastic representation is low in Parliament (Kanchan Chandra, “Hardly the End of Dynastic Rule”, EPW, 12 July 2014), it is visible everywhere. A new politician-caste seems to have been formed like any other caste. No state is free from this disease and most of the politicians are, but of course, fond of their children. You need not go to Dhritarashtra and find fault with him for the war he fought. It is very funny how democracy has been turned into democratic-dynasty. Given the democratic stamp, it is perhaps worse than a kingdom under kings.

In Kerala, Karunakaran had his son crowned after him. For the sake of his sons, wives and daughter, M Karunanidhi has transformed the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam into his family empire.
G K Moopanar has nominated his son Vasan to take care of his political assets and P Chidambaram has renounced everything for the sake of his son, Karthik. What a great sacrifice!
