Do we need documentaries on documentarists? Is it essential to know the method in the madness of some who are obsessed with documenting everything? Why should that be important, or even necessary, when you have their work before you? Yet, when you think of the work of someone like the iconic documentary film-maker and activist Anand Patwardhan, the answer is “yes”. Because Patwardhan is not just a documentary film-maker. There is a certain method to his madness that one needs to try and understand to really appreciate what he does, how he does it and why he does it.
This then is what R V Ramani, a fairly well-known documentary film-maker and cinematographer in his own right, has attempted to record in his film Hindustan Humara.
