Savarnas and Ambedkar

Sankaran Krishna’s “On Introducing Ambedkar” (EPW, 19 April 2014) is one of the most balanced pieces I have come across on the debate over Arundhati Roy’s Introduction to B R Ambedkar’s Annihilation of Caste (AoC) which has been published by Navayana publishers. I am in agreement with Anand Teltumbde that AoC is to Ambedkar what the Communist Manifesto is to Marx and Engels.

It is indeed a great disservice to Ambedkar that conventional academic and cultural discourse treats him like an outsider. Even today, most upper castes, including many in my family, remain deeply parochial and casteist; if Navayana’s AoC will serve the purpose of introducing Ambedkar to my peers, then I do fully support that move.
