US War Drums over Syria

The alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria gives the United States an excuse to launch military strikes.

War drums are sounding again in the United States (US), this time for military attacks on Syria, along with its allies such as Britain and France. The ostensible reason for this round of intervention in west Asia is the alleged use of chemical weapons on the Syrian people in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta in late August, which has resulted in more than 300 deaths.

While it is not clear as to who used these weapons or what chemicals were used, the US has already jumped to the conclusion that it is the Syrian regime led by Bashar al-Assad that is responsible. Even as the Syrian regime has invited the United Nations (UN) to inspect the supposed use of chemical weapons and come to its own conclusions on the nature of the attacks, the US has reportedly sought to overlook the UN inquiry and is considering an immediate missile attack on Syria’s military facilities. Preparations for this attack are already under way with US cruise missiles positioned close to Syria and British fighter jets stationed in Cyprus. However, the British may now not be able to participate in the attacks given the defeat of the proposal in the British parliament
