An Old Publisher's Lament
The Business of Words by André Schiffrin (New Delhi:Navayana), 2011; pp 296, Rs 295.
The main thrust of this volume is that book publishing and selling have been hijacked by a bunch of profit-seeking buccaneers who have no regard for readers and writers of fine literature or of intellectually-challenging works. According to its author, André Schiffrin, a veteran American publisher at Pantheon Books for 30 years and subsequently founding-director of The New Press, these broad monopolistic and coarsening trends also apply to the media and to films.
This volume is a combined edition of The Business of Books, published in 2000, and of its sequel, Words and Money, published 10 years later.
