Reclaiming Submerged Identities

Dalit Writing in Malayalam

Reclaiming Submerged Identities

The Oxford India Anthology of Malayalam Dalit Writing edited by M Dasan, V Pratibha, Pradeepan Pampirikunnu and C S Chandrika (New Delhi: Oxford University Press), 2012; pp 322; Rs 595.

The category of the dalit diversely defined but sharing a common idea of historical roots of exclusion has gained articulation across the sociocultural spectrum (Guru 2004). Gopal Guru discussed in detail these various standpoints and frameworks that give a trajectory of the idea, movements and expressions around the category of dalit. Earlier political articulations were based on the issue of social exclusion and the historical roots of the category of dalit represent multiple ways of labelling starting from the colonial efforts of classification of caste groups, ascribed naming like “Harijan” by Gandhi and other non-dalit leaders to the present dalit-bahujan political assertions.
