The number of financial and investment companies covered by the Reserve Bank of India’s survey increased from 957 in 2000-01 to 1,340 in 2010-11. Their total income grew from Rs 5,841 crore to Rs 51,332 crore during the same period. Their net profits to net worth ratio reached a peak of 12.6% in 2006-07, declined to 5.4% in 2008-09, but again improved to 9.3% in 2010-11. Their debt-to-equity ratio turned adverse from 91.1% in 2005-06 to 147.2% in 2010-11 and so also their outside liabilities to net worth, from 233.8% to 261.2%.
