Too Harsh on Mamata
Some trends in West Bengal today are truly disturbing, made worse by shockingly irresponsible comments from the chief minister herself and senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders. Ishita Mukhopadhyay (“Moving towards Semi-fascism in West Bengal”, EPW, 26 May 2012) is correct that the promise for Parivartan (change) paid her rich dividends. Throughout her career she was rewarded whenever she posed a visible challenge to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], and this time the writing on the wall was too clear.
