According to the advance estimate of agricultural production in 2011-12, foodgrain production is to touch an all-time high of 250.4 million tonnes compared with the previous peak of 244.8 million tonnes in 2010-11. This is essentially from growth (2.9%) in cereal production, while there is expected to be a sharp fall (5.3%) in the production of pulses. Among commercial crops, while sugar cane and cotton is expected to marginally rise by 1.6% and 3.3%, respectively, the production of oilseeds is expected to decline sharply by 6.0%.
