Violence against Education Community

We, as members of the academic community of West Bengal, wish to express our deep concern over the sharp escalation in violence towards students, as well as teachers and other educational workers, in the state in recent months. A number of students, teachers and other educational workers have been attacked and murdered, many inside educational institutions, while others have been left seriously injured. Often, individuals with no academic affiliations or credentials have led such attacks. These attacks have led to a rapid deterioration in the academic environment across the state and made the continuation of normal educational activities in campuses increasingly diffi cult. We urge all individuals to take a fi rm and active stand against encouragement, abetment and toleration of violence in educational institutions, and in defence of a democratic tradition of free debate, student activism and political pluralism.
